Kamadgiri, also known as the heart of Chitrakoot or the original Chitrakoot, is a hill believed to have been home to Goddess Sita, Lord Rama, and Lord Lakshmana during their exile. It is said that those who perform a ritual circumambulation, or parikrama, around the hill will receive divine blessings. The 5 km path of the parikrama is dotted with temples, and many pilgrims sing hymns and chant as they make their way around the hill. The Shri Kamta Nath Mandir is a particularly important temple at this site. The fragrance of incense and the spiritual atmosphere make this a truly unique and sacred experience.
Shri Kamta Nath Mandir Chitrakoot is a holy site for Hindus located atop Kamadgiri Hill in Chitrakoot, shared by Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Daily thousands of pilgrims undertake the journey to this spiritual place as a result of the age-old practice of moving round the hill offering prayers for benediction. SBI is based in the southern region of the state and is widely recognised as Chitrakoot Dham’s most sacred destination. The path that circumnavigates it is approximately 5Kms long and people come with the belief and faith to complete the full circuit for personal healing and in faith.
This forms a unique spiritual periphery where people from various places come for prayers and blessings from this sacred shrine. Devotees believe that all holy places, or tirthas, are located along this path. Lord Kamtanath is the main deity worshipped at this temple, and several other temples are dedicated to him throughout the area.
The Kamadgiri Mountain in the state of Uttar Pradesh is reputed to be one of the most ancient religious destinations because it is believed that yagna was initially offered by the god Brahma at this place before he started creating life. It also adds another legend as Lord Rama with his wife Sitadevi had to undergo exile for twelve years according to a number of legends. Those who had an opportunity to walk along the streets of this interesting place always notice the increased level of spiritual energy. They credit this to the sublimity of the region and rich canopy cover of trees and other vegetation.
Legend says that during Lord Ram’s Shraddha of his father,
Chitrakoot evolved as a sacred land where all the gods and goddesses came to join for the
special meal of the shuddhi ceremony which is offered thirteen days after the death of the
nearest and dearest one in the family. They have fallen in love with the place, the
entrancing beauty of the area they were in. The presence of Lord Ram turned it into a
spiritual centre of sorts. Thus, they did not feel comfortable leaving the site. Vashistha,
the family priest understanding that both of them wanted to stay back to serve lord Ram,
failed to recite the visarjan .
Even today if a common tourist comes across this place which is dotted with rocks, caves,
ashrams and temples with sages who are into holy and spiritual sadhana they feel infused
with a world that is not of their own and they are immediately lost to a world which is full
of ritualism, spiritualism and preaching. This place attracts thousands of pilgrims of the
quest for the truth from all over the world due to their never-ending passion for
improvement. Historical records show that the passage that was used for circumambulation was
constructed by the Bundelkhand kings. Devotees take about three to four hours to complete
the parikrama. Besides the religious aspect, this place is famous for its tranquillity and
the environment it provides. Chitrakoot is one of the most beautiful religious sites for
people who would like to spend a day in complete solitude and prayers.
